To play in an Album Room, all songs in the album being played must have been downloaded before the album can be played.Ī small optional step while selecting the song is selecting the background that all of the players will play on. To be able to play a song in a VS Room, the song must either be free and each player have the song downloaded, or be paid for and downloaded by each player. On the hardest difficulty, many songs have a limited amount of music not being played by the user. The harder the difficulty, the more notes, drum beats, and other sounds need to be played by the player, as opposed to automatically being played in the background. Most of the songs have 3 difficulty levels of play. The genres that the songs are part of run the gamut from piano pieces to techno versions of classical pieces to songs that are reminiscent of J-Pop, with an unusually large number of Christmas -themed songs. Eventually a guy came up with the concept of a rare “Shoot the Moon” hand. Originally the game was designed to dump and then avoid cards, there wasn’t a solid point or game system developed yet. A few variants of the game were developed, including “Black Maria.” Even though at that point Black Maria was a “variant” of the game style, it is what developed into the standard game that people still play today. There was very little to keep men and women and children entertained, so card games were popular. During that time card games were the primary source of entertainment. While Hearts stemmed from something that originated in the 1700s, it officially became known as “Hearts” in 1850. Hearts is a different type of card game, which involves “tricking” the opponents to win. Though if you are short a person or have a few extra, it can be played just as easily with 3 to 6 people. The game is suited for people of all ages who like Hearts or card games.Hearts is a card game that involves 4 players. The winner of the game is whoever has the lowest score when the game ends. The game ends when any player has 100 or more points. If you score all points on a round you can decide if you would prefer to subtract 26 points from your total score or add 26 points to all of your competitors. Each Heart is worth a point & the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points. If you get stuck eating the Queen of Spades you already scored half the points, so if nobody else has scored any points yet it may make sense to see if you can shoot the moon.If a suit has been laid many times be careful with casually taking a trick where someone else may throw the Queen of Spades on it.Avoid taking tricks and the deal unless you have low Spades to lead back, have a high Spade you are discarding last, or you are trying to shoot the moon.In general you want to get rid of your highest cards you can without winning tricks, or get rid of high Spades if you are throwing last. The objective of the game is to not score points. The Queen of Spades is worth 13 points.Players do not score points for winning tricks, but score points if any Hearts or the Queen of Spades are thrown on a trick they win.Players must follow the suit led if they have it in their hand. ![]() Hearts are considered broken if a player has previously thrown a Heart on another trick.Hearts may not be led until the suit is broken or the player leading a Heart has nothing but Hearts in their hand. After the first hand the Queen of Spades can be thrown any time.If a player does not have any Clubs they may not throw the Queen of Spades or a Heart on the first trick.Players must follow suit if they have a card of the suit led in their hand. The game starts with a player throwing the 2 of Clubs.Try to avoid having large runs of cards near the upper limit of any suit unless you also have many low ranked cards in that suit or are trying to shoot the moon. ![]()

Again, instead of reviewing the film itself, which requires the acknowledged repetition of sentiments expressed endlessly over the last few days, we will focus on a single sequence - call it the “incinerator stand-off”– and use it as a means of explaining Pixar’s enduring power within the art form. Thus, we come to our major SPOILER warning. Before long, they find themselves in the very same dangerous dilemma they were hoping to avoid in the first place. Andy is now a 17-year-old colleg- bound teen, and his collection of playthings are feeling the sting of neglect and possible disposal. Toy Story 3 begins several years after the first sequel. We are talking, of course, about the incinerator showdown, a moment which finds Buzz, Woody, and the gang relying on the wrong plaything to aid in their escape, a massive machine hurtling them ever closer to their doom, and a single moment of resolve that stands as one of the most emotional and heartfelt finales ever in the history of film - live action or animated.įirst, a little plot perspective. Instead of offering an in-depth review of Toy Story 3 let’s instead focus on a seminal sequence in the stellar Pixar trequel, a moment that will have many in tears and have more than a few covering their faces in fear. It certainly comes from one of the year’s best films (though at least three Rotten Tomatoes registered critics disagree with that assessment) and while it may seem too soon to suggest, there’s no doub few will match it come July and/or August. Special thanks to comicbookmovie.Though it’s barely two months old, it is time to declare a best scene of Summer 2010. Well, the concept art for that version has surfaced just in time for the holidays, and they are terrifying. Few details emerged regarding this incarnation of the film only the plot to rescue a malfunctioning Buzz from being decommissioned at a Taiwanese recall factory. The contested film in question? None other than Toy Story 3.Ī proxy animation-house named Circle 7 Animation (derisively nicknamed "Pixaren't") was created in 2004 to helm this new project. However, Disney still contractually retained the rights to create sequels to any of Pixar's properties produced during their initial 7-year contract, albeit complying with Pixar's right of first refusal. In 2005, Pixar were in the midst of a "conscious uncoupling" from Disney. Despite this, the final film would not see the light of a projection booth until 2010. The production of the third installment in the Toy Story franchise dates all the way back to 2004 (just five years after the release of Toy Story 2). Remember that one scene in Toy Story 3 when Woody and his pals were being rapidly sucked into the gaping molten hell-mouth of an industrial incinerator? Yeah, it could have been worse. Whether that distance was the result of divorce, death, work, addiction, or emotional absence, the effect is often the same. Many, if not the majority of men older than 20, grew up with the familial/sociological phenomenon of distant fathers. How Do Families and Society Teach Us About Power? It is not simply what a young man learns about power, but also the manner in which he learns it, that determines how we will use power in the service of him and others. The experience of being the object of another's power shapes and guides how a boy will act when he becomes a man. A young man learns about power when his elders exert their power over him. Many men define power as the ability to do or act, to exert influence over the environment, to accomplish something, or resist the influence of others. Power is not rage, control, or domination. Ghandi, a more proper symbol of power, seems archaic in our muscles-from-steroids society. Men who internalize such symbols of power become as tragic as Tyson, full of rage and unproductive. Accepted symbols of power are often Mike Tyson-like figures-strong in body, but abusive to others. Most men in our society are confused about what it means to be powerful. It seems all we have to help guide us are the Marvel comic books and, more recently, the spate of successful Batman, Fantastic Four, and other superheroes. The Icarus phenomenon haunts us in our daily professional and personal lives. Many men are trapped in adolescence, frustrated by fantasies of unmodulated and unbounded power, or constricted in their experience of what it means to be a man. The Icarus myth warns us of the dangers of power, but unfortunately provides no solution to our dilemma. This experience leaves us uncertain about ourselves and unbalances our relationship with the power of manhood. Our fathers, thrust into a competitive and work-centered world, never made the time to guide us in the transition from boyhood to manhood. ![]() The growth of our culture during that period made us anonymous, and the symbols of power continue to confuse and frighten us. Power is often confusing for boys of the baby boom generation. Myths produce a response in us relevant to our own understanding of our lives. ![]() This story of a clever father and his willful sons attracts the 20 th century audience. Examining this myth in the light of the psychic experience of our adolescent years can illuminate how we internalize power in our lives as men.ĭespite its small place in the vast repertoire of Greek Mythology, the story of Icarus is well known today. The myth of Icarus and his father, Daedalus, teaches by its tragedy. Myths reflect subconscious truth power can be a dangerous and potentially fatal commodity for a boy as he transitions from boyhood to manhood. It teaches us about power in our relationship with our fathers. The myth of Icarus is especially relevant to boys of the baby boom (children born after World War II and up until the Vietnam era). Icarus had soared towards the sun, his wax melted and he fell to his death. He peered down at the ocean and saw a small cluster of feathers floating on the water. Daedalus looked around in flight and could not find his son. Drunk with his newfound power, he soared higher in the sky, ignoring his father's warning. Also, like many adolescents, Icarus moved rapidly from ungainliness to false prowess. He found flight awkward at first, but learned quickly and soon flew with the attributes of adolescence-his physical strength made up for his lack of coordination and balance. Like any adolescent boy, Icarus struggled with parental advice. Icarus took off with all intentions of following his father's sage advice. ![]() If he flew too low, his wings would get wet in the ocean if he flew too high, the sun would melt the wax and the wings would disintegrate. ![]() Just before their flight, Daedalus warned his son to be careful. In theory, the wings would allow Daedalus and Icarus to fly above the labyrinth and off the island to freedom. Ever the inventor, Daedalus built wings of feathers and wax to escape. Because he was his father's son, Icarus faced the same fate. Sometime after building it, Daedalus fell into disfavor with the king of Crete and was condemned to live the rest of his life inside the labyrinth. Even Daedalus could not find a way out of his maze. He was the son of Daedalus, an accomplished inventor, who produced an ingenious labyrinth on the island of Cnossus for Minos, the king of Crete. Icarus was a minor character in Greek Mythology, famous for not surviving the transition from boyhood to manhood. Ĭhristian IX was therefore the grandfather of an emperor and two kings who all married granddaughters of Victoria, one of whom ( Maud of Wales) was also a granddaughter of Christian IX. Lastly, Victoria had two more granddaughters who became queens: Marie of Edinburgh, who married Ferdinand I of Romania, and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, who married Alfonso XIII of Spain. William II, German Emperor and King of Prussia, was the elder brother of Sophia of Prussia and thus another reigning grandson of Victoria. Christian X of Denmark was the elder brother of Haakon VII of Norway and thus another grandson of Christian IX of Denmark. Other grandchildren became monarchs in their own right or consorts. Her son, Nicholas II of Russia, married Alix of Hesse and by Rhine, yet another granddaughter of Queen Victoria, on 26 November 1894, and she became empress-consort as Alexandra Feodorovna. Between 18 she was empress-consort of Russia. Following the untimely death of her fiancé Dagmar married Nicholas's younger brother, the Tsarevich Alexander, in 1866, taking the Russian name Maria Feodorovna. In 1865 Christian IX's second daughter, Princess Dagmar, became engaged to Tsarevich Nicholas of Russia, son and heir of Tsar Alexander II. On 27 October 1889 his son, later Constantine I of Greece, married Sophia of Prussia, a granddaughter of Victoria, forging another union between descendants of the British queen and the Danish king. The second son of Christian IX, Prince William, became King of Greece as George I shortly after his sister Alexandra's marriage due to this new connection with the British royal family. However these two marriages were not the only unions among and between descendants of Victoria and Christian IX. Among their six children were George V (who was also Emperor of India throughout his reign) and his sister Maud of Wales (who would later marry their cousin Haakon VII of Norway, another grandchild of Christian IX, on 22 July 1896). Victoria arranged the marriage of her eldest son and heir-apparent, the future Edward VII, to Alexandra of Denmark, the eldest daughter of Christian IX, which took place on 10 March 1863. ![]() Grandchildren 19th century Christian IX in 1898 with his and Victoria's great-grandson Prince Edward of York, the future King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom. ![]() For this reason Victoria was nicknamed the " grandmother of Europe" and Christian IX the " father-in-law of Europe". At the outbreak of the First World War their grandchildren occupied the thrones of Denmark, Greece, Norway, Germany, Romania, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom. The royal descendants of Queen Victoria and of King Christian IX, monarchs of the United Kingdom (1837–1901) and Denmark (1863–1906) respectively, currently occupy the thrones of Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The Marriage of the Prince of Wales painting by William Powell Frith from 1865 seems to be the only existing contemporary painting where Queen Victoria and King Christian IX are depicted together. |
